Kitta, her sister, and Bjornolf stood frozen with indecision in the her dad’s office. Were the intruders in their home the bad guys? Or the police?

The police would have identified themselves.

“Either we sneak out a window, or we hide in the house,” Kitta whispered.

“No place to hide,” Rona said softly. “I say let’s go for the window.”

The intruder moved toward the kitchen. Something crashed in the living room, and he let out a curse.

Bjornolf yanked open one of the windows. Kitta jammed her arm into the wall space and felt the edge of a book.

Rona tugged at her arm. “Come on. We’ve got to—”

“Wait, there are two journals down here.” When she reached deeper, the paneling swallowed Kitta’s whole arm. Cringing, she stuck her hand into a mass of cottony spider webs. Her skin crawling, she envisioned black widow or brown recluse spiders biting her.

Bjornolf motioned her to move, and she pulled her arm out, then bolted for the door to her father’s office, locking it, just as the brass knob twisted. Bjornolf stuck his arm into the hole.

“Hey, Chase! This door’s locked. It wasn’t before,” one of the intruders said.

“Kick it in.”

Bjornolf waved at Kitta and Rona to escape through the window. Kitta tried handing Rona their mother’s journal. “Start the car!”

“No, I won’t leave without you.”

The door shuddered with the first kick. If the doors hadn’t been solid oak, the guy would have destroyed it the first time around.

“Damn, I hate spiders.” Bjornolf made a face. “Got the books.” Yanking his arm out of the wall, he held two journals coated with dust and spider webs, but he scowled at the girls. “Move, move, move.” He crowded them to the window.

Rona climbed out first, then Kitta, and they made a dead run for the car. Bjornolf clomped behind them and tossed the journals into their car, then headed for a blue pickup parked curbside in front of the house.

“Oh, hurry, Bjornolf,” Kitta said under her breath, praying he wouldn’t get caught.

“What’s he doing?” Rona backed the car into the street.

“I can’t tell. Oh, oh, here they come!” Kitta screamed out the window, “Bjornolf!”

He disappeared behind the pickup.

“What’s he doing?” Rona asked again, the car idling.

“Don’t know. But...the pickup’s sinking into the asphalt.”

“He’s letting the air out of their tires.”

Rona drove up into the lawn and nearly hit the first of the blond bearded men. Kitta cried out. The man cursed, slammed his fist against the hood of the car, and jumped out of the way.

“Jeez, Rona, I thought you weren’t an action/adventurer kind of girl.”

Rona gave her the most sinister grin. “Guess you never know what you’ll do when push comes to shove.”

Kitta watched out the rear window. “Bjornolf’s in his vehicle. Go!”

The man Rona nearly ran over kicked his front tire while the other, with a shorter, thicker build, spoke on a cell phone.

“Looks like the other guy is calling in reinforcements,” Kitta said, her voice dejected.

“Great. I’m sure they know where we’re headed, and they probably saw us with the notebooks.
